Nostalgia is the sorrowful feeling in remembering the past. Such a feeling is closely linked to spatial, mental and social alienation and is sometimes used interchangeably. The contemporary Iraqi literature, which has faced an optional or compulsory emigration of the poets and literary men in the past 50 years, provides a proper ground for studying the elements of nostalgia and alienation. The Taabata Manfa Divan is written by Adnan Al-Sayegh who migrated from Iraq in 1993 following the political problems. This Divan is a reflection of alienation and nostalgic feelings shared by all Iraqi poets in exile. In the current study, the nostalgic elements in the writer’s divan is analyzed using a descriptive-analytic design. Then, their relation with the spatial, psychological and social alienation is scrutinized. The homeland nostology is at the forefront of Adnan Al-Sayegh’s attention as the terms covering spatial alienation is more frequently used than the social and psychological alienation.
Keywords: Nostalgia, Alienation, Contemporary Iraq poetry, Adnan Al-Sayegh, Taabata Manfa.
